Milestone for Mildura Base Public Hospital clinical trials unit

Congratulations to Mildura Base Public Hospital (MBPH)’s Research and Clinical Trial Unit for achieving another milestone recently. The recruitment of its first local patient to an international lung cancer clinical trial highlights the unit’s growth in capability, following another milestone earlier this year, when the Precision-ITS teletrial was opened in partnership with Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. The first patients have also joined this trial.Regional Trials Network-Victoria (RTN-Vic), TrialHub (Australia), and Cancer Trials Australia have been providing financial, operational, mentoring and workforce upskilling support to the clinical trials unit at MBPH. The unit was also built with the generous community co-donations through MBPH’s Foundation. With funding from the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF), RTN-Vic’s ReVITALISE project has also helped MBPH deliver the necessary infrastructure and technology for the research and clinical trials unit, including clinic spaces, freezers, and a centrifuge, as well as staff FTEs including research nurses and a clinical trial unit manager. Since its first clinical trial in September 2024, eight trials and studies have opened at MBPH. Participants from the Mallee and Wimmera Southern Mallee regions have been able to access potentially life-saving treatments, without making the long trip to Melbourne. Almost 60 locals are now accessing trials at MBPH.More on the eighth cancer clinical trial in MBPH’s Heartbeat magazine.
